How does Cialis work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Cialis(tadalafil) is a reversable selective inhibitor of the specific phosphodiesterase type 5(PDE5) cGMP. When sexual excitement causes local release of NO, inhibiting of PDE5 by Cialis causes an increase of cGMP levels in the cavernous body of the penis. This causes smooth muscles to relax and increases blood flow to the penis. Tadalafil does not cause an erection without sexual stimulation.

Cialis acts within 36 hours and effect occurs in 16 minutes after the sexual excitement. Tadalafil does not cause changes in systolic and diastolic pressure and heart rate.

Cialis is availabla in the form of soft tablets that are dissolved directly under the tongue. This increases the bioavalability of the preparation.

Which conditions are treated with Cialis?

Cialis is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction.

What should a patient know prior taking the medication?

Calis is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients.

Cialis is not approved to treat females or children and adolescents under 18 years of age.

Cialis should not be taken in patients which take organic nitrates.

Cialis should be used with caution in:

• Cardiovascular disease including recent heart attacks, strokes, high or low blood pressure, heart failure, abnormal heart rhythm
• Liver and kidney diseases
• Vision problems
• Blood diseases including Sickle cell anemia, leukemia
• Penis deformation
• Multiple myeloma

Which adverse effects may manifest when using the medication?

The most common Cialis side effects are associated with blocking of PDE5. These are: headache, stuffy nose, nasal congestion, dizziness, drowsiness, upset stomach or dyspepsia, hot flushing, pain in the arms, legs and muscles.

In rare cases Cialis may cause: angina, high blood pressure, insomnia, blurred vision, migraines, problems with vision and hearing.

It is not necessary that the side effects will manifest in an individual but the possibility still exist. For more information please consult your health care provider.

Which groups of drugs or specific preparations may interact with Cialis?

The drug is affected by the following:

• Alcoholic beverages
• Alpha blockers
• High blood pressure medicines
• Antumycotics
• Certain antibiotics
• Grape fruit juice
• Nitrates
• Antivirals
• Xantines(Theophylline)

Tell your doctor about all the herbal preparations as well as prescription drugs that you are currently taking even if they are not on the list.
