How does Nexium work and what pharmaceutical group does it belong to?

Nexium is an antiulcer medication - proton pump inhibitor chemically an isomer of omeprazole. Esomeprazole reduces hydrochloric acid secretion in the stomach by specific inhibition of proton pumps in the parietal cells. Esomeprazole activates and suppresses proton pump - H + / K + ATPase. Also it suppresses bazal and stimulated hydrochloric acid secretion. An effect is achieved in an hour after oral administration of the drug.

Which conditions are treated with Nexium?

Esomeprazole treats the following diseases:

• In gastroesophageal reflux disease: erosive reflux esophagitis, secondary prophylaxis in patients with treated esophagitis, symptomatic treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease.
• In combination therapy: gastric and duodenal ulcer associated with Helicobacter pylori.

What should a patient know before using Nexium?

• Before and after the treatment endoscopic control is necessary to avoid malignancy because the treatment can mask the illness and postpone the right diagnosis.
• The drug should not be used in case hypersensitivity, pregnancy, breastfeeding.
• With caution: child age, renal failure.

The drug is affected by the following:

• Anticonvulsants
